Welcome to St John – United States Virgin Islands!
St. John, the smallest & most idyllic of the three United States Virgin Islands, is best known for its dozens of postcard perfect white sand beaches, turquoise bays abounding in colorful corals & rainbows of tropical fish & endless vistas of green velvet hills. Only nine miles long & four miles wide, two thirds of the island land area and much of the coastal waters surrounding St. John are protected as the Virgin Islands National Park, so its spectacular beaches & untouched forests will remain pristine for generations to come & remain accessible to all. There are tours of the National Park by Jeep or safari bus & hikes on spectacular trails led by Park Rangers who enrich the experience with talks on the island’s history & geology as well as its flora & fauna.
While it is only twenty minutes from St. Thomas by convenient hourly ferry, St. John is the peaceful, non-commercialized paradise of island fantasies. It has no high-rise buildings, traffic lights, cruise ship docks or an airport! Despite its unspoiled atmosphere, it offers nearly every facility & amenity generally found at major resorts. Frequent visitors to St. John are avid beach lovers who aren’t content to just read about St. John so these visitors are always ready for the next chance to return to their beloved St John! Getting around the island is easy. Cruz Bay, the major town where the ferry docks are located, is on the west end of the island facing Red Hook in St. Thomas. Cruz Bay is connected by paved roads (see map) to most of the bays & beaches & to Coral Bay, the picturesque yacht harbor on the east end of the island. Several local agencies, all a short walk from the passenger ferry dock, offer rental cars, jeeps & canopied trucks by the day or week. Colorful canopied taxis also line the waterfront by the passenger ferry dock all day & evening, offering rides to every island destination as well as descriptive island tours.
The spectrum of accommodations available on St. John can be found at every budget level and includes two luxury resort hotels, privately owned multi-million dollar villas & private vacation homes with spectacular ocean views, sophisticated condominium apartments, guest houses & small inns with lots of atmosphere & campsites in and adjacent to the Virgin Islands National Park. Avid deep sea fishermen will relish sport fishing in our local waters for tuna, wahoo, sail fish and marlin – always an experience to remember.
Land Activities include hikes you can take on your own or with a National Park guide, horseback riding, donkey trail rides, rock climbing, exploring historic ruins & more.
St. John’s surprisingly large selection of restaurants runs from breeze cooled spots for barbecue or burgers to full service hideaways for Continental cuisine & candlelight.
